I have tried to read the bible, I go with my friends and family to church.
I just don't get it, I can't bring myself to actually buy into all the "god" stuff.

How can I start to 'believe'?

If I were to take a guess, I would suspect you are running into a common problem. A contradiction that you are seeing regarding what many church groups teach about God and what Our Creator’s true nature, teachings and expectations of us really are.

As for how you can start to believe, personally I would suggest starting with the primary rule that Jesus gave us to follow, a simple though sometimes complex rule that goes, "do to others as we would have others do to us".

Most of the rest of the bible simply commentary of how to best follow that rule.

The other thing I would suggest to always try toremember, when it comes to faith in Our Creator is:

Never confuse the practices of the people with the church,
Never confuse the practices of the church with religion,
And Never Ever confuse the practices of religion with God.

For sadly so much of what some groups teach is exactly why many can not bring themselves to have faith in Our Creator, for the teachings are out of context and not the ways of Our Creator. Obviously, I do not know if the church you go to is that way or not. But I suspect that the root of your issues with accepting Our Lord are based in some of the misconceptions many have regarding Our Creator.

I suspect once you open your heart to what Our Creator really is, and not the watered down human version that so many groups try to present as God, I think you will find it much easier to have faith in Him. Then when you are ready to be able to accept Jesus as your Lord and Savior.
