the only "official" site I found with a definition is:
http://www.islamic-dictionary.com/index.php?word=harami
which says:
Harami means Thief or Burglar.
however from other less formal sites the term as more far reaching definitions. (i am not going to include the links as several of the definitions I am deriving from the context of the conversations and text.)
so take the following for what it is worth i think the definitions and variations are accurate but i am not 100% sure (95% confident with the accuracy but not 100% sure).
the term is derived from "haram," Arabic for 'forbidden'
a haramis person is a person that does forbidden things (not just a thief).
-
haramis = a child born outside marriage.
haramis = bastard when used as insult. (in several articles this seems to be the context that was intended.)
-
with some of the younger generation:
Haramis seems to be starting to define a fringe youth culture that identifies itself as Muslim but at the same time wants to live a more western lifestyle. For example being able to have boy/girl friends. Being able to dress as they wish. be able to question and speak critically of or question leadership. From what I understand basically the group that identifies as Haramis wants to be able to have the unique "Muslim status" (be different/unique) but at the same time have the freedoms and ability to live as people do in the rest of the world. |
