surau is a small prayer space or a small building used for prayer.
It does not have the same status as a mosque.
A masjid is a mosque.
A surau can be declared a mosque. However a mosque (masjid) apparently can not be downgraded to that of a surau even though the community may now be using a larger mosque.
One of the main differences , from what I understand, is that a surau is used for daily prayers only, while a mosque is used for the daily prayers and the Friday congregation sermons, in addition to other Islamic activities.
Mosques also apparently have some special religious status and some extra rules apply regarding what can and can not be done in or to the structures. The references I found were very vague (kaafir information). As we find more exact information we will post it. |
