Saudi state is based on Islam: Salman

MADINAH: Riyadh Gov. Prince Salman emphasized on Tuesday that the Saudi state has been based on Islam since the time of its formation by the late King Abdul Aziz.

"The Saudi government has been an extension of the first Islamic state in Madinah... and its constitution is based on the Qur'an and Sunnah," the governor said. "The Kingdom's political and social systems are rooted in Islam and not based on any imported thoughts or ideas," he said while giving a lecture at Madinah Islamic University.

He commended the endeavors of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah for the success of Islamic causes, in the service of the two holy mosques and Muslims and for the progress of Saudis.

Prince Salman said every major tribe in Saudi Arabia has played a role in the unification of the country under the leadership of King Abdul Aziz.

"The fathers and grandfathers of every family and tribes in this country have actively participated in the Kingdom's unification and strengthen its power and message," he said.

He condemned those who try to denigrate Sheikh Abdul Wahab. "If you check the heritage of Sheikh Abdul Wahab, you cannot find anything that violate the teachings of the Qur'an and Sunnah," he said.

He highlighted the Saudi government's efforts to reinforce peace, security and stability in the Arabian Peninsula.

Earlier, Prince Salman was given a honorary doctorate degree in the history of Saudi state by the university in appreciation of his contributions toward the Kingdom's history.

The function was attended by Madinah Gov. Prince Abdul Aziz bin Majed, other princes and senior officials as well as a large number of students and teachers.
