There were many different types of zina however
The term usually refers to voluntary sexual intercourse between a muslim man and a muslim woman not married to one another, irrespective of whether one or both of them are married to other persons or not.

In some useages zina can refer to two people simply gazing at each other for a prolonged period of time. (especially if the male is non-muslim)

Zina is considered one of the great sins in Islam.

Punishment is usually very harsh.
