I saw some of the plans presented in the news several years ago with the artist renderings of what they planed to do with the remains.
I wish I could find some of the original pictures again so that I could point links to the articles and the pictures. (Now I see why you want to copy the news articles rather than just linking to them. In case they change information or flat out disappear.)
Anyway as I remember the write up from back then it was just stated that the remains would be part of the museum that would be part of the lower levels of the new trade center tower. With pictures if people walking by the wall where I assumed the remains would be stored (implying that it would be predominate and public) as a way to always remind people what happened and why we had to rebuild the towers. Seems like there was even a messages on the wall that said something to the nature of … even with the passage of time we will not forget … though I am sure that is not the exact message.
At the time I thought it might be a little eerie for some people to see a memorial in such a predominate location, especially in 50 or 75 years. But for today and for the immediate future, it would be good to help allow the emotional healing that not only the families (from around the world) of the victims of that barbaric attack it will also help everyone heal and remember and push forward with what we must do to keep such things from ever happening again.
But by no means did I get the impression that the site would be at the rock bottom location of the building most likely next to the sewer processing and other disgusting things that have to be in buildings that most people never think about. And I definitely did not get the impression that the area was not going to be public accessible.
As they said in the article yes they did talk and make public their plans but several key details seem to have been either left out or modified since then.
Either way shame on the city officials for doing such a thing. I really do not blame the families of the victims for being upset. Actually I would not blame them if they wanted to lynch the officials for such a heartless deception.

9/11 victims' families voice displeasure over plans to place unidentified remains 70ft below ground
BY JOAQUIM ANDRADE

Monday, April 04, 2011
A group of 9/11 victims' families spoke out Sunday against placing their loved ones' still-unidentified remains 70ft below ground in a museum.
Protesters said they want officials to contact the families of all 2,749 victims of the terror attack for their opinions before building a below-ground repository inside the museum.
"We are against the remains at the museum" especially below ground level, said Norman Siegel, the group's lawyer.
Sally Regenhard, whose firefighter son Christian died on 9/11, said family members should make the final decision about the remains.
"The city is making human remains an attraction of the museum," Regenhard said. "We demand a separate [location] above ground, fully accessible to the public area - not in the basement of a museum."
Rosemary Cain, whose firefighter son George also died at Ground Zero, said the families have the "right to consultation."
"[Mayor] Bloomberg does not own the remains," Cain said.
Museum spokesman Michael Frazier said victims' families were told about the location of the repository years ago.
"In 2006 the museum had a huge gathering where they talked about with the families and said exactly what was going to happen with the remains," Frazier said.
Frazier said the repository will be under the control of the city medical examiner's office and will not be open to the public.
Nearly 10 years after the attack, remains of only 59% of the people who died at Ground Zero on 9/11 have been identified. |
