What do we do when the people that are supposed to defend and uphold the law refuse do their job properly?
Let us use an extreme hypothetical example.
The students in a middle town school are made up mostly of children of parents that have been speaking out openly against the police, local and national government officials.
A fire broke out in the school rather than put the fire out the fire officials block all the exits not allowing any of the children to escape. The police hold the crowd back aggressively protecting the firemen that are trapping the children inside the burning school by either clubbing or shooting anyone that attempted to get to the firemen or open an exit.
One of the parents goes to his home (which is only a short distance away) and brings back an illegal semi-automatic rifle. [Illegal because all firearms owned by civilians were suppose to have been turned into the government several years ago with serious penalties for non-compliance. ]
The man opened fire on the police that were activity protecting the firemen that were blocking a primary exit. After the police scattered and no longer a major threat he started shooting at the firemen that were still blocking the exit. Then gave cover fire, shooting any police or firemen that attempted regain control of the exit in order to protect the other parents as they got the main doors open and started pulling out as many of the children as they could.
The man was later arrested and charged with position of an illegal fire arm and ammunition as well as, causing a disturbance, interfering with government officials in the performance of their duties along with multiple counts of first degree (premeditated) murder of the police and firemen. Just to list a few of the very long list of charges against the man.
You find yourself on the jury of the man’s trial.
The Judge gives the jury specific instructions that they are to base their verdict of guilt or innocence based only on the law. Motivation or reasons for the man’s actions are not to be considered. The jury’s only responsibility is to determine if the man broke the laws of the land.
There is no question that the man is guilty of all the government charges as defined by the law.
The question is do you, as a member, of the jury disregard the judge’s instructions and vote based on the persons motivation to save the children or follow the judges instructions and find him guilty based on the law? |
