This is a very complex question, but I think the very basic reasons fall into one of two main categories.

The First:

I think a lot of people are confused about religious faith. Probably because there are so many people that pretend to be following our Creator but are not: 2Co 11:13 For such men are false apostles, deceitful workers, masquerading as Christ's apostles. 2Co 11:14 And no wonder, for even Satan masquerades as an angel of light.

The only exposure to Our Lord many people have ever seen are the false examples of Christianity. As a result they say something to the nature of “I want nothing to do with that garbage.” Unfortunately, because so many of the false groups are very high profile, and the only example of christianianity many people have ever seen, they tend to assume all Christians and Christianity in general is that way.

As a result they avoid faith in Our Lord all together.

The Second:

Some people will not believe anything. Not even reality. Once they have set their mind to dreaded "I am right and you are wrong" mode.

Even in business and work, I have tried to tell people of pending problems that their actions or equipment or whatever that might be going to cause in the future. More often than not, I am told, "oh it's not a problem", "it's nothing to worry about". Or at the extreme end that, "I don't know what I am talking about, such a thing can not be . . . it will never happen."

That is until the very thing I tried to warn them about "bites" them, then they turn around and say "Why didn't you warn us of this and what would happen?"

To which I simply responded, "I tried."

The Bible talks about this also, one example being:

The story of Lazarus and the rich man, (Luke Chapter 16:27-31)
Where at the end the rich man was trying to find some way to warn his family of the torments to come if they did not repent of their evil ways.

27. Then he said, I pray thee therefore, father, that thou wouldst send him to my father's house:
28. For I have five brethren; that he may testify to them, lest they also come into this place of torment.
29. Abraham saith to him, They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them.
30. And he said, No, father Abraham: but if one shall go to them from the dead, they will repent.
31.And he said to him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one shall rise from the dead.

Sadly there are simply some people that will not believe, no matter what we say or do.

Just like so many of the people I worked with, when the day comes that they discover we were right and were telling the truth. On that day when they turn around saying, "Why didn't you warn us of this and what would happen?"

All we can do at that point is shrug our shoulders and say, " tried."
