I know a lot of you do not have children but for the sake of argument let us pretend you do. Or substitute children for brother, sister, mother, father, husband, wife, or someone else that is very close to you.
Now suppose someone walks up to you and says:
You really should get some of our (emphasis in their voice) insurance (end emphasis).
You know, all kinds of things (emphasis) could (end emphasis) happen, your home could catch on fire, you could be in serious accident.
Not to mention you have very lovely children, (pause) it would be a (emphasis) shame (end emphasis) if something were to happen to them. (pause) Getting the insurance can help protect you from all kinds of (emphasis) unforeseen events (end emphasis).
Taken word for word there is nothing wrong with the statements. And if questioned about it the person that made the threat will simply say that they are concerned about you being uninsured. And that you must be extremely paranoid and irrational to take anything they said as a threat.
Unfortunately if an outside person reading the text of the threat does not know or understand how the group / person that made the statements normally operates the true underlying meaning of the threat will likely be lost.
With that in mind let’s consider part of a speech given by Sheikh Khaled Yasin
Quote
Now for the Muslim lady the wearing of the hajab,
(Pause)
It Is a protection for her,
It is a distinction for her
(pause)
yes it is a uniform so that she will be known to be (emphasis) a Muslim (end emphasis),
she will not be molested, she will not be insulted, (pause) (emphasis) and (end emphasis)
no need for a man to stare at her and look at her because there is nothing appearing of her
that would cause any unnatural attraction.
Therefore it is more than likely she can come and go with decency and dignity and that her natural ornaments would not create her inordinate liability for her like it so happens when you see women wearin’ (slight pause) jeans and clothing that seems as if they painted it on themselves. (pause)
Now all you have to do is look at these two women and you can see the problems that exist (pause)
Now of course it doesn’t mean that every woman that does not cover herself completely it doesn’t mean that she is immoral, it doesn’t mean that.
But the Koran gives the Muslim women what we consider to be . . . (pause)
An ounce of prevention is worth what? . (pause) . what is it? . (pause) . you know the um . . . what is it called an ounce of prevention is worth what . . .(a slight ah ha type tone in the voice) a pound of cure. (end tone change)
So just like, just like (pause) if I asked any one of you (pause) what is your PIN number . (pause) . you wouldn’t tell me . (pause) . if I came to visit you in your house . (pause) . you wouldn’t have your certificates of deposit in front of me, you wouldn’t have your your jewels in front of me, you wouldn’t have your our stack of money or your savings in front of me, distributed just because I am a friend . (slight pause) that doesn’t mean everything should be transparent.
NO! You have those valuables in a place that is (emphasis) safe (end emphasis). Might be a bank, might be a safety deposit box, well that is just money, that’s just tangible things. So don’t blame us and don’t blame god if (slight pause) if he tells us that our mothers and our wives and our daughters that they should be covered and in a safe place.
(End quote)
Read that last line again:
So don’t blame us and don’t blame god if he tells us that our mothers and our wives and our daughters that they should be covered and in a safe place.
Am I the only one that what sees this alleged moderate Muslim is saying as a threat to all women basically saying, “Muslim or not if you are not wearing the proper Islamic garb you can expect to be harassed, assaulted, raped or worse?” or “Ladies it is not our fault (Muslims/Muslim Males) if you go into public without following the rules of islam (proper garb as well as with your escort) and something happens to you. It is your fault because you (all women that are non-conforming/non-submissive to Islam) were asking for it.”
Or am I just a paranoid islamaphobe? |

GurlRusz for future reference you really need to post a link reference especially when saying that someone has made certain statements.
In this case however I think I can help you out.
I happen to have heard this little speech before
(and had it booked marked for future reference)
There are several references to this little speech.
One of the videos is locate at:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QHWZRzNpa94
The section you are referencing starts at about 2:20 (two minutes twenty seconds into the video)
Actually I was impressed at the quality of the transcription you did. A lot of times people claim to transcribe something but their text does not match much of anything actually said. In your case it was word for word even the vocal inflictions were on the mark.
Next time you should include the hand gestures ( just kidding)
As for is it a threat or not I will leave that for each person to decide.
Personally I can see how the statements can be taken either direction.
Though with the reference to money – you keep money in a save place to keep something from happening to it and then don’t blame us if something happens to you for not wearing the protection or staying in a safe place, I would start leaning towards an opinion that the statements are not a simple explanation of why Muslim Women wear the hajab and why others should also.
However as you stated it is important to see how the person and group normally operate and other statements they have made to determine how his references and innuendos should be interpreted. |
